Can a Guy Have a Crush on a Tankless Water Heater?

July 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Howdy Houston!  I hope everybody had an enjoyable and safe independance day.  This week we’re going to talk about one of the most exciting new products in the tankless industry.  That new product is the Navien condensing-type tankless water heater.

The Navien tankless water heater is the most efficient in the industry.  Period. Depending on the model, the efficiency ranges from 97.3% to 98.8%!  Because of this ultra-high efficiency rating, the exhaust temperatures range from 90 to 140 degrees, which allows these units to be vented with standard pvc piping as opposed to the very expensive class III stainless steel vent pipe, and in most cases, this equates to considerable savings on the installation cost.

This efficiency also means greater energy savings because it produces more hot water per btu  than other leading tankless manufacturers. For example, the Navien CR-180, which is the smallest unit available, uses 150,000 btu’s of gas to make 8.5 gallons of hot water per minute, while most of the other manufacturers only make 5 gallons of hot water per minute using 150,000 btu’s of gas.  In my mind that’s quite a difference!

Navien is also one of the few manufacturers that uses stainless steel in their heat exchanger construction.  Stainless steel heat exchangers are up to 20 times more resistant than copper heat exchangers to corrosion and condensation damage. Stainless steel is much smoother and less porous than copper, so we also have less problems with calcium and hard water scale buildup on the critical heat exchanger parts,  which means flushing and cleaning the heat exchangers will very rarely, if ever, have to be done. All this being said, the life expectancy of the Navien units will be in the range of 20-30 years.

Navien also has a built in leak detector available in  every unit .  If any moisture is detected within the unit, the machine automatically turns off the water supply to the unit, virtually eliminating the possibility of costly property damage due to water leaks.

Navien has the best warranty in the industry to date.   It has a 15 year warranty on the heat exchanger, 6 year parts warranty, and 1 year parts and labor.

Navien also has models available with built in circulation pumps and mini buffer tanks. These models deliver hot water to faucets quickly, which aids in water conservation.  This also means that there is no minimum flow rate with these units.  These units also eliminate the so-called “cold water sandwich” due to the no-minimum flow rate. All other manufacturers have a minimum flow rate of at least 0.5 gallons per minute.

We have partnered with Navien for about a year now, have installed in excess of 125 units in that time, and have had minimal problems with these machines.  As you guys know, I’ve been a plumber for about 17 yrs and it takes alot to impress me with new product lines, but Navien has met and exceeded all my expectations when it comes to tankless water heaters.  We  have installed enough of the units to know that this is an outstanding product, and a product worthy of being included in the Hot Water Guys inventory.

Have a great week Houston, and remember, keep those questions rolling in so that we can have our question and answer forum going full speed by next week!   As always you can post comments here or reach me at  eddie-at-hotwaterguys.com.

One reason to THANK Washington

There’s a new (and improved!) 2009 – 2010 Tax Credit for Energy Conserving Appliances.

Beginning on January 1, 2009, and continuing through December 31, 2010, the Tax Credit has been raised to 30% of the cost of a Tankless Water Heater and its installation. Our average installation runs somewhere around $3200 / $3300, so this means anyone purchasing a new Tankless Water Heater will get a refund of about $1000 (max is $1500).  That’s great news for homeowners and everyone in the Tankless Industry!

Read more about it at Energy.gov.  To learn more about Tankless Water Heaters, visit HotWaterGuys.com, too!

From a Realtor’s perspective…

April 4, 2008 · 3 Comments

The last time you explored a house on the market, did you ever hear the seller’s agent touting a 50-gallon water heater as a feature? Probably not. That’s like saying, “Notice that each room is already furnished with electricity. And look, the kitchen includes a sink!”

One of the other trends I see in my non-stop flow of Google Alerts is an increase in online real estate postings that mention when a home includes a tankless water heater. Sure, it’s the “green” thing to do, but as Houston Realtors Emily and John Horne recently pointed out on their blog, these gizmos not only deliver a tsunami of hot water, they pay for themselves rather quickly.

A selling feature, indeed!

Hot water is a hot topic

March 28, 2008 · 1 Comment

I subscribe to Google Alerts so I can keep my ear to the ground for ‘net rumblings about things that I’m interested in — like my friends, my company, tankless water heaters, and Alton Brown (because I’m a diehard fan). Every day, Google emails me a list of links to stories and blog postings on whatever keywords I’m watching.

There’s an awful lot of buzz about tankless water heaters! I get more alerts with longer lists of links on that topic than all of the other alerts I get combined. Who knew?

Some point to short comments on somebody’s personal blog. Others to an active discussion about going tankless, like this one sparked by an LA Times journalist. Then there are always a few well-intentioned references out there that I wave in front of my favorite Hot Water Guy, Tom, thinking we could feature it here or on the HWG website… but after reviewing many of them, Tom tells me a lot of information in them is just plain wrong.

Don’t be afraid to read up on tankless on the Web. But my advice is to double-check the facts with Tom and Kenny if you’re thinking of going tankless yourself! Nuff said.

Nice to meet you!

Hi, I’m Tom the HotWaterGuy. Hot Water is a company in Houston, Texas, specializing in tankless water heating. That means we know more than your average bear about tankless water heating… but we’re still learning because the tankless industry is continuing to change. In fact, there are some exciting new developments afoot.

One thing coming is a hybrid tank / tankless machine. It’s supposed to combine the benefits of a traditional tank heater and a tankless water heater. You will be able to use it with a re-circulating hot water system without the need for an external tank. It also is supposed to be a direct replacement for a tank heater using the same “B” type vent material as a tank. And the cost of the machine and installation are supposed to be cheaper than a tankless water heater.

Another thing on the horizon is a 95% efficient tankless water heater that we can vent with PVC plastic pipe. It will be more expensive a machine but you will save on the price of the stainless steel vent piping. I’m guessing the cost will be somewhat more than a regular tankless, but the 95% efficiency will be the deciding factor for some people.

Anyway, stay tuned to our blog for more developments. And please ask questions or post comments here whenever you like. I’d love to get a conversation started.

Why are we doing a blog?

March 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

You might think there’s not a lot to say about tankless water heaters.  But we can’t help noticing how often this subject comes up in mainstream media.

For instance, in a December interview with NBC’s Today Show (launch the video), Brad Pitt said he was buying his dad a tankless water heater for Christmas!  That same month,  The Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters turned a traditional tank heater into a high-altitude rocket.  (More on that later!)

We’ll be using our blog space to share news and thoughts on hot water.  It’s what Hot Water Guys should be doing, after all!
